The original El Primero bore the world’s first-ever automatic chronograph movement, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, a frequency ahead of its time to guarantee exceptional precision. To reinforce its sporty personality, the Defy El Primero 21 Carbon comes with a textured black rubber strap, finished with a carbon and titanium folding clasp.Most revered as the pioneer in the development of the integrated automatic chronograph, dating back to 1969 with the debut of the El Primero, ZENITH has perpetuated the tenet of melding watchmaking tradition with avant-garde innovations since its founding. Once wound, it also provides 50 hours of power reserve for the watch. With these two escapements, one for watches with a frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, the other for the chronograph boosted to 360,000 vibrations per hour, this certified automatic chronometer movement measures short times to 1/100th of a second. This feat is achieved by the El Primero 9004 caliber assembled by Zenith. At the same time, the central second hand does its revolutions at a frantic rate of one dial revolution per second. The hands of the two totalizers, the 30-minute hands at 3 o’clock and the 60-second hands at 6 o’clock, are activated during a short time measurement. Triggering the chronograph sets in motion a hypnotic spectacle. On this 44mm diameter monochrome composition, the time information is revealed by black Super-LumiNova® SLN on the hour and minute hands and indexes. Not only does it reinforce the masculine style of the timepiece, but it also enhances its mechanical architecture, which can be seen through the openwork dial.
The Defy El Primero 21 Carbon presents this singularity thanks to a relevant use of the material. The heterogeneous streaks of the composite fibers used to machine the cases create a design that is now clearly identifiable and linked to our times.
